Caritas Social Action Network (CSAN), together with the Bishops’ Conference, is launching a national programme to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery (HTMS) in our communities.
Human Trafficking & Modern Slavery is the world’s most profitable crime and is steadily growing. It impacts every country and targets victims of all ages and backgrounds. It is often regarded as a ‘hidden crime’ as it is difficult to collect data on victims and enterprises, but we can all do our part to ensure our communities are safeguarded. The first thing we must do in helping the fight against trafficking and slavery is to educate ourselves – what is it, how does it impact individuals and communities, and what can we do to safeguard potential victims and support survivors?
The Pope has called on us to ‘unite our efforts to free victims and stop this crime [against humanity]’. If each individual takes one just one action, together we can help safeguard our communities and fight human trafficking and modern slavery. CSAN together with the Bishops’ Conference is launching a Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery Awareness Ambassador programme across Catholic dioceses in England & Wales.
If you would like to join the fight against all forms of trafficking and exploitation in our communities, please reach out to your local Caritas agency or parish safeguarding team for more information.
You can learn more about the programme and how to set one up in your diocese in the document linked below:
We have created a number of resources to assist with raising awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery. We have created a number of worksheets to explain the many forms of exploitation, which we hope will encourage dialogue in communities and help to identify and safeguard victims.
These resources are meant to raise awareness of the many forms of humna trafficking and modern slavery that exist, and to encourage dialogue within the community on these issues. We encourage you to select the resource most applicable to your community to allow you to engage with individuals and their concerns, so that you may together work on practical solutions.
We will continue to add to this list as we develop new resources.
