In an joint statement published on 25 June 2020, Caritas Europa called on governments throughout Europe to make a stronger commitment to social services in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic has put enormous strain on multiple sectors of society. Social services, in particular, have been greatly affected, with many having to adapt their functioning to comply with national confinement regulations.
These services, which are more essential now than ever, especially for the vulnerable among us, face shortages of personal protective gear (PPE), funding, and general recognition and support in national policy making.
Caritas Europa joined together with 11 social service agencies for an online summit, which discussed how the EU can better support these services during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as after. Their joint statement demands more recognition, urgent action, and more resilience regarding social services.
